From SCADA Signal to Work Order: The 60-Second Autonomous Pipeline
How on-premise ML models detect anomalies in SCADA data and automatically create incidents, work orders, and material reservations — in under 60 seconds.
We sat with an operations manager at a wind farm last year. He showed us his screen — five different tools open, none of them talking to each other. A breakdown had happened two days earlier. His team found out from a site technician calling in, not from the system.

Most Systems Don't Fail Suddenly
They show early signals. The problem is — no one catches them in time.
A wind turbine gearbox doesn't go from healthy to broken in an instant. Weeks before failure, subtle patterns emerge in SCADA data: bearing temperature creeping 2°C above baseline, vibration frequency shifting by 0.3 Hz, oil pressure oscillating in a pattern that doesn't match normal load cycles.
Individually, these signals are noise. Together, they're a prediction.
The challenge has always been: who's watching? A typical wind farm generates 600+ sensor readings per turbine per second. Multiply that by 50–200 turbines, and you have a data volume that no human team can monitor in real-time.
The Autonomous Pipeline
Here's what happens in a modern SCADA-to-work-order pipeline, start to finish:
Step 1: Ingestion (0–5 seconds)
Raw SCADA data flows into the on-premise processing engine. Temperature, vibration, pressure, rotational speed, power output, wind speed — every parameter the turbine reports. The system normalises, validates, and stores. Bad readings (sensor dropouts, communication errors) are flagged and excluded automatically using 3-sigma outlier detection.
Step 2: Anomaly Detection (5–15 seconds)
On-premise ML models — trained on historical failure patterns for each asset type — score every reading against expected behaviour. This isn't simple threshold alerting (temperature > 80°C = alarm). It's multivariate pattern recognition: "Given the current wind speed, load, and ambient temperature, this bearing temperature is 2.3 standard deviations above predicted."
The model produces an anomaly score (0–1) and a confidence level. Scores above the dynamic threshold trigger the next step.
Step 3: Classification & Severity (15–25 seconds)
Not every anomaly is a failure. The classification engine determines: Is this a degradation pattern (slow decline, weeks to failure)? A transient spike (recover within hours)? Or an imminent failure (intervene now)?
Each classification maps to a severity level:
Step 4: Incident Creation (25–35 seconds)
For anomalies classified as High or Critical, the system auto-creates an incident in the ITSM module. The incident includes: asset identification, anomaly type, severity, supporting sensor data, historical context (has this happened before?), and recommended action.
No human triggered this. No one sent an email. The system saw, classified, and documented.
Step 5: Work Order Generation (35–50 seconds)
The incident triggers work order creation with the right maintenance type (corrective, condition-based, or emergency), assigned to the correct team based on asset location and skill requirements. Material requirements are checked against inventory. If parts are needed and available, they're reserved. If not, a procurement request is queued.
Step 6: Notification (50–60 seconds)
The maintenance team receives a notification — via Slack, Teams, email, or SMS — with the work order, severity assessment, recommended timeline, and a direct link to all supporting data.
